If you are of State Pension age (currently 66) or over, whether working or retired and are suffering from any medical conditions, then you could be eligible for more than £5,000 tax-free every year if you are entitled to it. You do not need to have a formal diagnosis to apply.

Who is eligible to claim Pension Age Disability Payment?

Those who are of State Pension age (currently 66) or older, live in Scotland and need help with personal care due to a disability or long-term health condition may be eligible for Pension Age Disability Payment. You do not need a formal diagnosis. You must have had care or supervision needs for at least 26 weeks, unless you are terminally ill. We are unable to apply on your behalf if you have already submitted an application. 

You can claim for various conditions, these include issues which affect your daily living. Related to conditions and issues such as:

  • Respiratory Conditions - COPD, Asthma or breathing issues

Who is NOT eligible to claim Pension Age Disability Payment?

Please note that you CANNOT receive this payment if:

  • You are already claiming Adult Disability Payment (ADP)
  • You are already claiming Scottish Adult Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
  • You are below State Pension age (currently 66)
  • You live in a care home where the local council pays for your care (though you may be eligible if you pay all your own care costs)
  • We are unable to apply for Pension Age Disability Payment if you have submitted an application and are awaiting Social Security Scotland to process it. However, we can help if you have previously been turned down and would like to apply again.

How much is Pension Age Disability Payment?

The amount of Pension Age Disability Payment varies depending on the level of care needed.

From April 7th 2025, the rates are as follows:

The higher rate is £110.40 a week, that’s over £478 a month or £956 per couple!! This is for people who need help or supervision during the day and night, or if they are terminally ill.

The lower rate is £73.90 a week, that’s over £320 a month or £640 per couple!! This is for people who need help or supervision during the day or night.

Any money you do receive doesn't need to be spent on your care.

Is Pension Age Disability Payment means-tested? 

No, Pension Age Disability Payment is not means-tested, which means your income, savings and assets will not affect your eligibility or the amount you receive.

How do I secure my Pension Age Disability Payment? 

You can apply for Pension Age Disability Payment yourself through Social Security Scotland online, by phone or by post. The application is in two parts and can be complex to complete.

If successful, your payments will be made every 4 weeks into your bank, building society or credit union account.
