Attendance Allowance in 2025: Everything UK Citizens Need to Know

As we move into 2025, many older individuals in the UK are still unaware of the crucial financial support available through Attendance Allowance. This benefit is specifically designed for those over the State Pension age who require help with personal care due to illness, disability, or other health conditions. However, navigating the application process and understanding eligibility can be complex. In this blog, we cover everything you need to know about Attendance Allowance in 2025, including how to apply, payment rates, and why seeking expert assistance can increase your chances of a successful claim.

What is Attendance Allowance?

Attendance Allowance is a tax-free government benefit aimed at helping older individuals who need assistance with personal care. Unlike other benefits, Attendance Allowance is not means-tested, meaning your income or savings do not affect your eligibility. This financial support can help individuals cover additional care costs, whether for hiring a carer, adapting the home, or supporting everyday living expenses - but the money can be spent however you like.

Who is Eligible for Attendance Allowance in 2025?

To qualify for Attendance Allowance, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be over the State Pension age (currently 66 in the UK).

  • Have a disability, long-term illness, or mental or physical condition that affects your daily living activities, such as dressing, washing, or moving around safely.

It’s important to note that you do not need to have a formal carer to qualify. The benefit is based on the level of help you need, not on whether you receive assistance from someone else.

You CANNOT claim Attendance Allowance if you are already claiming ADP, DLA or PIP.

Which conditions are eligible to receive Attendance Allowance?

How Much is Attendance Allowance in 2025?

The benefit is paid at two rates, depending on the severity of your condition and the amount of support you need:

  • Lower rate: £72.65 a week, that’s £629 a month per couple

  • Higher rate: £108.55 a week, that’s £942 a month per couple

These payments can be used to improve your quality of life, whether by hiring help, funding mobility aids, or covering additional household costs.

How to Apply for Attendance Allowance

Applying for Attendance Allowance can be complex, and many individuals find it difficult to navigate the process successfully. Here’s what you need to know:

Applying Directly

You can submit an application yourself through the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), but be aware that many applicants struggle with the 32-page document, leading to rejections. In fact, 92% of applications are initially declined due to mistakes or missing details. If your application is rejected, it can be confusing and time-consuming to rectify the issue and re-apply.

How We Can Help

At Jonathan Owe, we offer a specialist application service to increase your chances of securing this lifelong benefit.
